Everything you need to know about SpotCode location addressing system
SpotCode is a location addressing system that converts any geographic coordinates into short, pronounceable and memorable syllable sequences. For example, instead of '-35.708661, 140.650827', you get 'ma·ke|ti·si|vo·mi|ni·ne'.
SpotCode provides 2,8m precision, meaning it can pinpoint locations with the same accuracy of a modern phone. This is more accurate than the most precise service available today and far more precise than traditional postal addresses.
Simply click on any location on our map, and SpotCode automatically generates an address for that point. You can then share this address with others, who can enter it to navigate to your exact location. Once you get the address on the app, you can navigate to it using our built-in navigation system for addresses that are close by, or open it in your favorite navigation app.
Yes. For full offline capability, install the app as a PWA.
SpotCode offers 2,8m precision (vs 3-meter), uses phonetic syllables (easier to pronounce), works in any language that understands the latin alphabet without translation, and is available as open source. What3Words uses random word combinations that can be confusing and requires language-specific versions.
Learn moreGPS coordinates like '40.7128, -74.0060' are difficult to remember and communicate, especially over voice. SpotCode converts these into memorable syllables like 'ma·ke|ti·si|vo·mi|ni·ne' while maintaining 2,8m precision.
Yes, for human communication. Plus Codes like '8FWV+XG' are alphanumeric and hard to pronounce over phone or radio. SpotCode uses clear syllables designed for voice communication while providing better precision.
Learn morePlacekey is designed for business/POI identification and data analytics, using hex strings that aren't human-readable. SpotCode is designed for customer-facing applications with memorable syllables that work for any location, not just businesses.
Learn moreYes, the SpotCode algorithm is available as open source with full API access. You can self-host the solution or contact us at alvaro@sanluca.cc for managed enterprise solutions and custom integrations.

8 syllables provide 2,8m accuracy, but a shorter code still provides useful information about the location.

Absolutely. Emergency services are a primary use case for SpotCode. The voice-friendly syllables work perfectly for 911 calls, radio communication, and dispatch coordination. Contact us at alvaro@sanluca.cc for emergency service partnerships and custom implementations.
Use SpotCode when you need precise location sharing in areas without clear addresses: construction sites, outdoor events, remote locations, specific building entrances, parking spots, or any location where traditional addresses are imprecise.
Yes, delivery services love SpotCode because it eliminates 'address not found' problems. Customers can share the exact delivery point (apartment entrance, office door, etc.) and drivers navigate directly there.
Excellent for international use. The syllable system works in any language that understands the latin alphabet, and you don't need local address knowledge. A SpotCode in Tokyo works the same way as one in New York or Lagos.
That's one of SpotCode's biggest advantages. The syllables are designed for clear voice communication over phone, radio, or in noisy environments. Try saying 'ma·ke|ti·si|vo·mi|ni·ne' vs 'minus 74.0060, plus 40.7128' over a radio.
Our system provides real-time validation as you type. If you enter an invalid syllable combination, you'll see an error message. The system also suggests corrections for common typos.
Check that you've entered all syllables correctly and in the right order. SpotCodes are case-insensitive but syllable order matters. If problems persist, try refreshing the page or contact support.
SpotCodes are algorithmically generated to ensure global uniqueness and precision. Custom codes would break the system's mathematical precision. However, you can save frequently used locations with custom names.
